Dental implants are a proven method of replacing missing teeth for many patients. Teeth can be lost due to gum problems, tooth decay or trauma. In many cases, dentures or bridges can adequately restore the lost teeth, but in certain circumstances this is not possible, and implants can often be used as an alternative.
Implants generally consist of;
- A titanium “root” which is placed in the jaw surgically
- A crown, bridge or denture which attaches to the implant/s and is visible in the mouth
Each patient has individual requirements, and treatment planning is on a case by case basis.
In general, the implants are placed in the jaw and then allowed to heal for several months. Temporary restorations are placed to maintain function and appearance during the interim period.
This procedure can be carried out with local anaesthetic or combined with sedation if the patient is nervous.
After a suitable healing period, the implants can be exposed, and the final restorations completed.
